 Selena Quintanilla Perez (Spanish pronunciation Selena Quintanilla Perez (Spanish pronunciation: [se' 16, 1971-March 31, 1995), also known as Selena, is an American Tejano singer. Her contributions to music and fashion have made her the "Queen" of Tejano music. Selena is among the most popular Mexican-American entertainers of the 20th century. Billboard magazine placed her third on their list of "Greatest Latino Artists" based on Latin album releases and Latin charts of music. Her attire earned her the nickname "Tejano Madonna". She also is among the most influential Latin music artists of all time , and has been credited with bringing the Tejano genre into the mainstream market.The youngest child of the Quintanilla family, she debuted on the music scene as part of the group Selena y Los Dinos, with her two elder siblings A.B. Quintanilla Quintanilla. The singer was frequently criticized during the 1980s and she was refused performances at Texas venues for her performance of Tejano music, a predominantly male-dominated genre. After being awarded the Tejano Music Award in 1987 for Female Vocalist, she began to gain notoriety. The singer signed with EMI Latin in 1989. Her self-titled debut album was released in the year following. Her brother was her principal music producer and writer. Entre a Mi Mundo (1992) was a top album, reaching number one in the US Billboard Regional Mexican Albums Chart for eight months in a row. It was described by music critics as being the "breakthrough" album of her career. "Como la Flor" was one of the album's singles, became her beloved track. Live! (1993) was nominated as the best Mexican/American album at 1994 Grammy Awards. It was the first Tejano album to be awarded this award.
